Welcome to Trail Do-alogue #4

Michael Goodwin from Kansas Trails Council and Elizabeth Burger of Sunflower Foundation will be present to lead the discussion and help answer questions.

Start in Sylvan Grove

In Sylvan Grove the group will learn 1) how high school kids helped build a trail around the school, 2) how the trail is being upgraded from dirt to gravel, and 3) about the Think Big plan that will connect the high school trail into the center of this town of 290. Our local host will be Jennifer Huehl.

Lunch will be at Flyboy Brewery & Eats in Sylvan Grove.

On to Achterberg Wildlife Friendly Demonstration Farm

We’ll all then take a drive 17 1/2 miles east of Sylvan Grove to privately-owned land southwest of Lincoln. Those who register will receive a map. At this location we’ll talk about public trails on private land and visualize where this trail, in early development stages, should go. It’s a beautiful area along a creek. Myron Leinwetter from Rossville will also share about a private land-public trail in Rossville. Jackie Augustine will be our local host.

More about the Connie Achterberg Sanctuary: This 240-acre property is a very special central-Kansas farm in Lincoln County. Creeks meander through substantial forest and diverse habitats that were once common on Kansas farms. Audubon of Kansas has planted filter strips of native grasses and wildflowers along the edge of every field. Pollinator habitat complements an eight-acre remnant prairie meadow. Brown Thrashers, Wild Turkeys, kingbirds, woodpeckers, and wrens are among the regulars.
